The TNT test is a specially designed on-farm culture
test that helps the herdsman make the critical intramammary
treatment decision. On many dairies, thousands of dollars
are spent each year on the treatment of mastitis. This
is done because many gram-positive mastitis organisms
will cause significant damage to cows if they go untreated.
Treatment will help reduce somatic cell counts, bacteria
counts and the spread of these organisms. However we
know that gram-negative mastitis infected cows do not
benefit from most intramammary treatment efforts. Treating
a cow for mastitis can include the cost of the intramammary
tube, which could range from $6 to $12, as well as the
cost of discarded milk, which can be anywhere from $25

plate, allows you to distinguish between gram-positive
and gram-negative infections and therefore identify
which cows will benefit from intramammary therapy. This
way you can direct your treatment efforts to the cows
that will benefit the most. Experience has shown that
TNT testing can allow you to dramatically reduce antibiotic
costs, antibiotic risk and dumped milk, perhaps by 50%
or more.
